World Environment School offer the International Baccalaureate program, which has been very successful. India has over 40 schools, including the Doon School, offering this program. The IB diploma is accepted all over the world, including universities in India. In the United Kingdom, the IBDP is “regarded as more academically challenging and broader than three or four A-levels”
The WES IB Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepare students for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. The Diploma Programme will prepare students for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society.
The curriculum will not cover Indian examinations.
The IB Diploma helps students to
- develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
- acquire breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, studying courses from 6 subject groups
- develop the skills and a positive attitude toward learning that will prepare them for higher education
- study at least two languages and increase understanding of cultures, including their own
- enhance their personal and interpersonal development through creativity, action and service
This will be a first green school in India and South Asia. Re-cycling and re-using are mandatory. As far as possible, bio-degradable products will be used.
The WES spreads over 100 acres in the hills of Coorg. Clean air, cool climate, and very little opportunity to jump over the walls and go to town, since there isn’t one for 8 miles.
Students must be 9 years old, or have passed Class 4.
No more than 20 students per class.
Teaching staff will be from any English speaking country, eg. the UK, the USA Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc., or Indian teachers trained to teach the IB program.
Indian teachers will teach Vedic math and Sanskrit (optional). Hindi will be a compulsory subject for Indian nationals, but they may choose not to take this subject in the finals.
All senior students will have laptops provided by the school. Each student will have a dedicated account to log into. Only selected internet sites for research will be available through the school’s private server. In senior school, no paper will be used to write essays or homework. Internet will not be available beyond the school server. E mails to friends and family are allowed. The student’s parents or guardians should provide a list of approved addresses.
The school will have junior and senior libraries for research, classical and light reading.
Students will have no access to television. Special programs will be recorded and played for them. Movies will be shown occasionally. Guest speakers will be invited to speak on various topics.
The assembly hall will double as an auditorium for plays, debates and music concerts.
Laboratories will be according to international standards, including computer skills and basic coding.
A doctor and two nurses are part of the staff and will be on call 24 hours. There will be a hospital in the school for minor ailments, cuts and bruises.
The school will have its own herd of cows, eating organic food and given herbal medicines if required. They will provide fresh milk, butter and ghee to the students. Students may adopt a cow and help care for its well being and may learn to milk it – if they wish.
Students will be given vegetable patches to cultivate and be taught to use organic pesticides and manures. Their produce will used in school meals, and their contribution will be announced.
Above are not compulsory for Final year.
All games are compulsory for one year, after which the student may choose his/her sport from tennis, squash, badminton, basketball, cricket, hockey, football, swimming and riding. Students may bring their own ponies/horses or use the school stable. Boxing and wrestling are compulsory only for boys, though girls are welcome. Coaches will train and supervise.
Sports facilities will be shared by junior and senior schools, but timings will differ.
The music program will provide training in western and Indian instruments, taught by qualified teachers. Instruments are provided only for beginners. If a student chooses an instrument to play permanently, he must provide his own. Pianos, being non-portable, will be provided by the school.
There will be a selection process for certain activities, such as singing and acting.
Students may choose from music, painting, ceramics, carpentry, wood and stone carving.
A student must choose at least one art form and may switch to another art form after the semester. Only two switches allowed.
Summer holidays will be 2 weeks and winter holidays 4 weeks – mid December to mid January. Spring and autumn breaks are 1 week each. Students may not go home during these breaks. They can choose to participate in any one of school- arranged activities – cycling tours, treks, camping, climbing, rafting or excursions to historical sites, accompanied by teachers and relevant professionals in each activity. Separate groups for Junior and Senior schools.
Separate housing for 9 to 13 year olds and for 14 + year olds. Separate buildings for girls and boys.
There will be fully equipped gymnasium, with parallel bars, weights, ropes, beams and vaulting horses. No treadmills or muscle building equipment. Sports will take care of that.
Student accommodation will be in dormitories, but the senior classes will be allotted separate two-person rooms furnished with beds, closets and study desks. They may decorate it as they wish but it will be their responsibility to keep it neat and clean. Weekly inspections will take place.
The residences will have special “dorm parents” who will live on the premises, supervise, advise and help the students and are responsible for their well-being.
No private books may be brought into the school without being shown to the dorm parents.
Home studies will be in the residences, supervised by dorm parents. Extra coaching will be provided if required.
This school aims to form adults who are healthy in mind and body, have a strong sense of right and wrong, who will be co-operative, responsible and supportive, enjoy learning and have enquiring minds, eager to experiment. If they fall, they will pick themselves up and try again.
